Syria: Quo Vadis?
"Mohammed Bouazizi, who set himself on fire - in contempt of the oppression exercised by the then Zine el Abidine Ben Ali’s regime – certainly did not know that he triggered domino-effect popular revolts against despotic regimes in the Arab World, starting from his own country – Tunisia - to Egypt, and now Syria.
Since mid-March, thousands of Syrians have been demonstrating in many provinces of the country – in Daraa, Banias, Aleppo, Jisr Al Shughour, Idlib, and elsewhere – calling for democratic changes and respect for human rights. Conversely, the official Syrian Media talks about conspiracies to overthrow the regime manipulated from across the northern and western borders.
Instead of bringing about concrete changes in Syria – satisfying the grievances of the Syrian people - the Syrian regime opted for systematic violence to quench the voices of those demanding democracy. Those peaceful protesters were and still are being met with a violent crackdown at the hands of the Syrian security forces. The calls for democracy are being systematically responded to with murder, arrests, and torture..."
